women who are experiencing an untimely pregnancy.
Professional social workers help women explore all the options available
to them and their babies. Temporary
foster care is provided for infants and toddlers. Children are cared for in
agency foster homes while birth parents make decisions regarding the child’s
future. Adoption services are
provided to children and prospective adoptive parents.
Before being approved as adoptive parents, clients must go through a home
study process. The agency is
committed to placing for adoption, children of all races and ages as well as
children with handicapping conditions. The
agency places children entrusted to its care as well as those in the custody of
local social service departments and other private agencies.

COMMONWEALTH CENTER FOR CHILDREN &
ADOLESCENTS is a 48-bed comprehensive child and adolescent psychiatric hospital
licensed and operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Mental
Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services.
It is located in the Shenandoah Valley, in historic Staunton, in the
Shenandoah Valley, near the intersection of I-81 and I-64.
The
mission of Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents is to serve those
children and adolescents admitted to the Center by providing psychiatric
diagnostic, evaluation, and treatment services of the highest quality attainable
at a reasonable cost to the Commonwealth and in coordination with the family,
community services and the professional community.
The Center’s services are provided to Virginia’s youth toward the
goal of improvement in their lives and development of their fullest potential.
WHO
IS SERVED? The Commonwealth Center
for Children and Adolescents functions as part of a network of mental health
services provided in conjunction with area community services boards and their
respective community mental health centers.
All admissions to Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents
emergency and non-emergency, are prescreened through the community mental health
center in the area of the child’s residence. Diagnoses of those admitted to Commonwealth Center for
Children and Adolescents are varied, reflecting both the diversity of
populations served and the comprehensiveness of the Center’s programs. These
include
the major categories of conduct disorders, attention deficit disorders, and
adjustment disorders. The Center
also accepts persons with special symptom disorders, such anorexia nervosa,
Tourette’s Syndrome, psychosomatic disorders and oppositional disorders. The
majority of the children served by the Center stay approximately 31 days.
Length of stay, of course, varies with the individual child.
REFERRAL
INFORMATION. Referrals should be
directed to the Admissions Coordinator at (540) 332-2107, Monday-Friday, 8:15
a.m. to 4:45 p. m. For after hour
emergencies, call (540) 332-2100. Local community service boards (mental health
clinic) prescreen all referrals) where the client resides. Following receipt of
prescreening and other referrals, a pre-admission evaluation appointment is
scheduled. Acceptance decisions are
usually made within a week following this evaluation. Fees are determined on an ability-to-pay basis and are
handled by the DMHMRSAS Reimbursement Division located on the grounds of Western
State Hospital.
