blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) extreme thinness going well below what is considered normal weight for height and age;
intense fear of becoming fat or gaining weight;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) a distorted body image that leaves the patient believing she is fat even when she is dangerously thin;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) obsessive exercising;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) weakness
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) depression
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) brittle nails and hair but increased baby-like hair on the body;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) dry ski;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) refusing to eat certain foods for fear of gaining weight;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) strange eating habits that include refusing to eat in front of people, cutting food into miniscule pieces;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) induce vomiting or misuse of laxatives

The body is starved, causing blood pressure to fall, breathing to slow, bones to become brittle, menstruation ceases, and sometimes chemical imbalance that can lead to heart failure. The loss of body fat may make sitting or lying down uncomfortable. Without treatment, the condition can be fatal.

Psychotherapy, nutrition counseling, behavior modification, and self-help groups. Often hospitalization is required. Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed.

blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) Bulimia Nervosa: is a life-threatening disorder. It involves bingeing, or eating large amounts of food, and then purging that food from the body by inducing vomiting or using laxatives. Bulimia is usually a variant of anorexia nervosa.

Symptoms:

blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) recurrent episodes of binge eating, with at least two episodes a week for three months;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) eating in secrecy;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) a nearly normal weight and healthy and successful appearance;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) low self-esteem and lack of control over eating;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) depression;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) obsessive-compulsive behaviors or tendency toward perfectionism;
blueshimmerbkdot.gif (1104 bytes) constant concern with body and weight

Treatment:
